The Fist — Hikite Versus the Boxing Guard
The oldest argument in martial arts, taken apart properly. The answer is in Funakoshi's first book from 1922.

Overview
It is the most reliable argument in martial arts, and it has run to the same pattern for over a hundred years. A karateka punches straight and pulls the other fist back to the hip — the hikite. A boxer watches this and asks the obvious question: why are you leaving your face open?
The question is fair. And the usual answer — “it generates counter-rotation and therefore more power” — is physically thin and does not address it. If you hold nothing in the retracting hand, you are pulling air, and air produces no meaningful torque.
But the question still misses the point, for a reason that can be documented historically: in the oldest sources of karate, the hikite hand is almost always holding something. The argument is being conducted about a movement that did not originally exist in this form.
This article places five systems side by side — karate, boxing, Wing Chun, Muay Thai and Jeet Kune Do — and asks what each hand position actually does. As with the roundhouse kick and with throwing, the technique is the solution, not the invention. Only here the problem is set not merely by a rule set but also — and this is what makes the case unusual — by a loss of historical context.
What Hikite Originally Was
The evidence is unusually clear for a field in which a great deal is otherwise merely asserted.
Gichin Funakoshi’s first book (Ryūkyū Kenpō: Karate, 1922) shows the retracted hand gripping the opponent while the other strikes. The same holds for the early writings of Kenwa Mabuni and for the Bubishi, the Chinese source compilation regarded as the technical ur-text of Okinawan karate. In these works there is virtually no application illustration in which the hikite hand is pulled back empty. It grips, it pulls, it locks, it takes the opponent’s balance.
That settles the argument at a stroke. Hikite was never a decision about guarding but the second half of a gripping technique. The opponent is seized by the wrist, the sleeve or the neck and dragged into the incoming strike. The opening on your own side is then not an opening, because the opponent is hanging off that hand and cannot move freely.
Chōki Motobu, the best-known practitioner of his generation and a notorious critic of schooled forms, did not criticise the principle of hikite but its height: the fist belongs under the armpit, not at the hip. That too is a statement about gripping mechanics, not about power generation.
How the Movement Lost Its Content
When karate came to Japan from the 1920s onward, was taught in schools and later became a competitive sport, the gripping and throwing components largely fell away — partly for pedagogical reasons (mass instruction needs techniques that can be practised without a partner), partly because of rules. What remained was the form of the movement without its object: a hand returning to the hip without bringing anything with it.
Only at this point does the boxer’s criticism become fully justified. But it does not hit the karate of the sources, only an abridged version of it. That is the actual matter in dispute — and it is rarely named as such.

Karate — The One Strike
The gyaku-zuki, the reverse punch with the rear hand, is the most thoroughly measured technique in karate. Studies of competitive athletes report execution times under 400 milliseconds and maximum fist velocities around 8 m/s; experienced practitioners differ from novices above all in higher limb velocity and greater punch impulse.
Mechanically the gyaku-zuki is a whole-body strike: the drive comes from the rear leg, travels through hip rotation into the trunk and from there into the arm. The fist rotates over the final stretch — the corkscrew motion that aligns the two large knuckles and locks the forearm in its most stable position.
The goal is stated plainly in the tradition: ikken hissatsu — one strike that finishes the matter. That objective only makes sense without gloves. With a bare fist, hand injury is the striker’s greatest risk, which makes combinations expensive and the single well-placed hit the rational strategy.
Boxing — The Guard Follows the Glove
The modern boxing guard — both fists at the head, chin tucked, elbows to the ribs — looks so self-evident that it is easy to forget how recent it is. The bare-knuckle boxers of the 19th century stood more upright, with arms extended well forward and hands low. Their posture resembled fencing more than modern boxing.
The reason for the change is the glove: a padded glove is large enough to hide behind, and it protects the hand far enough that combinations to the skull become possible without destroying your own metacarpals. Together these two effects produce the high guard and combination boxing.
Power in boxing comes less from an isolated hip rotation than from the combination of footwork and trunk rotation — in Championship Fighting (1950) Jack Dempsey described the falling step, the controlled dropping of body weight into the punch, as the actual power source of the straight strike.
Because only fists are permitted and only above the belt line, the boxing guard has to do exactly two things: protect the head and the liver. It does not need to handle kicks, knees or grips — and is therefore built tighter and higher than any other guard in this comparison.
Wing Chun — Structure Instead of Rotation
Wing Chun solves the same problem through a different principle. The centreline punch is delivered with a vertical fist, because this aligns the arm behind the elbow and transmits force along a straight, skeletally supported line. The elbow stays down — it is the structural element, not the shoulder.
The most conspicuous difference follows from this: Wing Chun does not wind up. The elbow does not travel behind the body, there is no rotation phase to give the opponent time. The price is a shorter acceleration path and therefore less force per individual strike. The compensation is cadence: chain punching replaces one heavy hit with many fast ones. A Wing Chun maxim puts it as a formula — machine gun, not cannon.
The free hand does not guard at the head but sits on the centreline, advanced. It is simultaneously a sensor, a barrier and the next strike. That works at close range, where contact with the opponent’s arm exists — and loses its purpose at boxing range, where there is nothing to feel.
Muay Thai — The Guard That Has More to Stop
The Thai guard looks like a poor boxing guard: hands higher, further from the head, elbows more open, torso more upright. As a boxing guard it would indeed be poor. But it is not one.
A Thai boxer has to reckon with eight weapons, not two. The advanced hands intercept knees and fend off the clinch grip around the neck; the upright posture makes it possible to lift the knee to block, which cannot be done from a deeply crouched boxing stance. The absence of extensive upper-body movement is likewise not an oversight: in Muay Thai, slipping your head to the side means slipping into a kick or a knee.
This is the same mechanism as with the kicks — the guard is an answer to the number of permitted attacks, not to their quality.
Jeet Kune Do — The Lead Hand as the Weapon
Bruce Lee drew a radical conclusion from precisely this observation. His straight lead inverts the boxing logic: the primary weapon is not the rear, strong hand but the front one, because it is closer to the target and has less distance to cover. The models are explicitly fencing — Lee worked with the lunge mechanics of the foil — and Dempsey’s falling step.
The optimisation criterion here differs from all four other systems: do not telegraph. The strike should start without any preparatory movement, because every preparation hands the opponent reaction time. Power is subordinated to that requirement.
Jeet Kune Do is therefore the only system in this comparison whose hand position follows not from a rule set but from its deliberate absence. Lee’s starting question was not “what scores?” but “what lands first?”.
The Evidence — and Why It Is Thin Here
For the roundhouse kick there is a controlled measurement across several systems. For the punch there is nothing comparable.
This matters, because newton figures pitting systems against one another circulate constantly online. They come from mutually independent studies with different measurement setups, different targets (force plate, heavy bag, dummy), different subject levels and different definitions of what is being measured at all. For boxers, peak values are reported that range from roughly 2700 N to 5000 N — within the boxing literature alone.
Comparing two numbers from two studies that differ in setup and population yields no statement about the systems. Anyone reading such a juxtaposition is reading measurement error, not martial arts.
What can responsibly be said:
- For the karate gyaku-zuki, execution times under 400 ms and fist velocities around 8 m/s are documented.
- Experience shows its effect above all in impulse and stability, not in peak force alone.
- A comparison between systems would require identical targets, identical instrumentation and equally qualified subjects. That study has not yet been conducted.
The Three Adjustment Screws
1. What the Hand Holds
Does it hold the opponent (karate of the sources), guard the head (boxing, Muay Thai), or occupy a line (Wing Chun, JKD)? This decision explains the hand position completely — and it is the point at which the hikite argument dissolves.

The more types of attack are permitted, the further the guard migrates away from the head and forward.
3. Whether the Hand Is Protected
The glove is the most underrated variable in the whole comparison. It changes three things at once: it permits combinations to the skull, it creates a surface to hide behind, and it makes gripping impossible. All three effects together produce modern boxing — and all three are absent in the bare-handed context from which karate and Wing Chun come.
What This Means for Your Own Training
Hikite only with content. Anyone practising kata should be able to say what the hand is holding in every hikite movement. If you cannot, you are practising an empty shell of a movement. The early sources are the best available reference here.
The guard follows the rule set, not the style. Moving from karate into kickboxing means putting the hands up — not because karate is wrong but because the new rule set permits different attacks. Conversely, a tight boxing guard is dangerous in Muay Thai, because it prevents the knee block.
A bare fist changes the arithmetic. Without a glove, your own hand is the most fragile item in play. That is the practical reason behind ikken hissatsu and behind any hardening work on the makiwara — the same logic that underlies Shaolin conditioning: not mysticism, but the necessity of striking with a tool you do not destroy in the process.
Structure and rotation are two routes, not two quality levels. Wing Chun’s short, structurally supported strike and the rotation-driven gyaku-zuki solve the same problem for different ranges. At close range the karateka has no rotational path; at middle range the Wing Chun fighter has no contact.
Common Fallacies
“Hikite is nonsense, it opens the guard.” True of the empty hikite of sport karate, false of the hikite of the sources. Funakoshi 1922, Mabuni and the Bubishi show the hand on the opponent. The criticism hits a loss of context, not a technique.
“Hikite generates more power through counter-rotation.” The most common defence and the weakest. The effect of a hand retracted empty is small and does not justify the opening in the guard. Anyone arguing this way defends the movement with the wrong argument and concedes the point.
“The boxing guard is objectively superior.” It is optimal for a rule set with two weapons and gloves. In Muay Thai it costs you knee blocks, bare-handed it costs you the ability to grip, and at Wing Chun’s close range it is in the way.
“A vertical fist is weaker than a horizontal one.” There is no robust study showing this. The two orientations align different knuckles and support the forearm differently; which is more favourable depends on the angle to the target, not on the style.
