Conditioning — a Programme That Stops Before the Iron

Adaptation and damage look the same in the short term. A programme that therefore measures sensitivity rather than hardness — and stops before the iron.

What this programme is — and why it contradicts its own basis

A programme of the training doctrine category, with a peculiarity that sets it apart from the others in this series: it contradicts its own basis in several places.

The article Shaolin Conditioning reports the tradition carefully, but in doing so it adopts claims that stand as facts although they are not. A programme simply following it would break the rules of the training doctrine category — above all the one demanding a falsification condition.


Three sentences this programme does not adopt

1 · “The tissue is so conditioned that hard materials no longer cause injury.” An absolute statement about biological tissue, nowhere demonstrated. What is demonstrated is something weaker and useful: under Wolff’s law (1892) bone densifies under regular loading, and bone-density measurements in experienced karateka show increased cortical density in the trained limbs. Denser bone is not the same as invulnerable tissue — about cartilage, tendons and nerves it says nothing.

2 · “Without dit da jow the tissue calcifies.” That comes from the tradition and is not a measurement. This programme treats the liniment as tradition and possible skin care, not as a protective measure. This is the most dangerous point: whoever takes a liniment for protection trains harder than they otherwise would. An assumed protection that is none raises the risk rather than lowering it.

3 · “Commercial products are no substitute.” An untestable claim about products whose effect is unshown in any case.

What is adopted: the phase logic (soft before hard), the four striking surfaces, the warning against progressing too fast, and the finding on bone remodelling — with the qualification that it takes months to years and requires recovery periods.


The decision this programme makes

It stops after the second phase. It contains no iron filings, no steel shot and no breaking test.

Reasoning: the justification for the third phase is sentence 1 above — that the tissue then takes no harm. That sentence is unsupported, while the damage pathway is documented: repeated impact loading on wrist and finger joints, nerve irritation, and the loss of tactile sensitivity the source article itself names as a risk.

This is not caution on principle but arithmetic: a phase whose benefit is asserted and whose harm is documented does not belong in a programme that wants to keep its claims testable.

What that does not say: that the third phase makes nobody hard. It probably does exactly that. The question is what else it does.


The falsification condition — and it looks different here

In the four preceding programmes of this category the test had the same shape: change the tool, see what survives. That does not fit here, because the question is a different one:

The claim is that tissue adapts. The counter-hypothesis is that it is being damaged. In the short term both look the same — in either case the hand becomes less sensitive.

That is precisely why insensitivity is not a criterion of success. It is the symptom both hypotheses share. What separates them is the fineness of the hand, not its hardness:

  1. Two-point discrimination. Two points of an unfolded paperclip, brought slowly together: at what distance do they feel like one? If that distance grows over months, the hand is losing sensation — then it is not adapting, it is going numb.
  2. Fine motor control. Fastening a button, finding a key in the dark. Anyone who does this worse than a year ago has traded something they did not mean to trade.
  3. Pain-free range of motion. Close and open the fist fully, every morning. A restriction that appears in the morning and eases during the day is the classic early sign of joint involvement.

How you notice this programme is harming rather than helping: the two-point distance grows · fine motor control declines · morning stiffness appears · numbness lasts more than an hour.

And the point that carries the whole thing: three of those four signs are not noticed by looking at the hand. They are noticed at the button, at the key, and on waking. That is why they are measured and not remembered.

What the test cannot do: it says nothing about whether a conditioned hand strikes harder.

The stages

Stage 0 · Preparation, not optional

Prescription: eight weeks of tendon and grip work without a single strike.

Why: tendons and ligaments adapt more slowly than muscle, and far more slowly than the nervous system habituates to pain. Whoever strikes before the connective tissue can bear it has tissue that yields and a sensation that reports none of it.

Anyone doing the Grip Strength Programme already has this stage: holding and carrying load exactly these structures, without a strike.

Exit: eight weeks, and no complaints in wrist or finger joints the next day.

Stage 1 · Mung beans

Entry: Stage 0 met, and the baseline values of the three measures recorded — beforehand, not reconstructed afterwards.

Prescription: a linen bag of mung beans. 50 strikes per striking surface, calm, with hip rotation. Four surfaces. Three to four times a week, at least three months.

Why 50 rather than the traditional 100: the figure is not measured and comes from a context with daily supervision by a teacher. Where a number is only convention, it is chosen downwards in case of doubt.

Light tingling after the session is expected. Numbness beyond an hour is not.

Exit: three months, all three measures unchanged or better, no complaints the next day. Not: it feels fine.

Stage 2 · Gravel

Prescription: replace the mung beans with coarse gravel. Back to 30 strikes per surface, then build up again over weeks. At least six months.

Why the volume drops: the material is the jump, not the number. Increasing material and volume together leaves two possible causes for any problem and no way to say which it was.

The pain threshold rises again at first in this phase — that is not a sign to work harder.

Exit: there is none. Stage 2 is the permanent state.

Stage 3 · Does not exist here

The tradition has a third phase with iron, followed by breaking tests. This programme contains neither — the justification for the third phase is unsupported, the damage pathway is not.

A programme stops where its evidence stops.


Counter-positions

This is no longer iron palm. It lands. This programme takes the first two thirds and leaves out the last — that is an amputation. The honest answer is not that it is the same thing after all, but: it is less, and deliberately so.

Centuries of experience weigh more than a missing study. The strongest objection, and not a foolish one. Tradition is experience, and experience is evidence — weak, but real. The counter: a tradition records who continued, not who stopped. Whoever had arthritis in their knuckles after two years founded no school.

Dit da jow works, anyone who uses it knows that. Possibly. What is disputed is not the effect but its status as protection, which is used to justify faster progression.

Without a breaking test you cannot know it works. Justified, and this programme has no good answer. It measures the price, not the yield. That is a weakness, not a virtue.

Conditioning makes the hand useless for everything else. The source article names exactly that as a risk. That is why sensation stands here not at the margin but as the criterion of success.


Safety — and here it is the longest section

Four signs at which training ends rather than being reduced:

  1. Numbness beyond an hour after the session. Not tingling — numbness.
  2. Morning stiffness of the finger joints that eases during the day.
  3. A growing two-point distance across two consecutive measurements.
  4. Swelling at a joint that persists overnight.

For all four: stop and get it checked. Not punch less. Nerve tissue and joint cartilage do not respond to reduction but to rest — and cartilage barely regenerates.

Who should not do this programme at all:

  • Children and adolescents. The growth plates in the hand stay open into late adolescence. There is no study, and precisely for that reason the conservative choice is the right one.
  • Anyone professionally dependent on fine hands — surgeon, musician, watchmaker. The price of this programme is sensation, and for those that is not an acceptable price.
  • With inflammatory joint disease, after hand injuries, with nerve compression syndromes — not without medical clearance.
  • With clotting disorders or on anticoagulants.

Further rules without exception:

  • Never increase both progression variables at once — material or volume, not both.
  • No training on consecutive days in Stage 2. Bone remodelling explicitly requires recovery.
  • The bag stands firm and low. A bag that slips twists the wrist at impact — the typical injury here, and it has nothing to do with hardness.
  • Breaking tests do not belong in this programme, not even once to try.

What this programme cannot do

  • It does not test its own benefit. It measures the price, not the yield. Whether a conditioned hand strikes better remains open — the greatest weakness of this text.
  • It is not the tradition. It leaves out the last third.
  • It makes no hand invulnerable. That claim is the reason it stops earlier than its model.
  • It cannot say whether this is worth it. The price is sensation and a risk; the yield is plausible and unmeasured. Everyone must do that arithmetic themselves — this programme only ensures both sides appear in it.
